Accra guide

Where to Stay in Accra, Ghana

Accra is spread out, and the neighbourhood you choose shapes your whole trip — how long you sit in traffic, what you can walk to in the evening, and how quickly you reach the airport on your way home. Here is an honest look at the main options for visitors, and where serviced apartments fit in.

First decide: hotel room or serviced apartment?

Hotels suit short business trips where you only need a bed and breakfast. A serviced apartment makes more sense when you are staying a week or longer, travelling with family, cooking some of your own meals, or simply want a living room, a kitchen and laundry rather than a single room. Rates on longer stays usually work out better too, because you are not eating every meal out.

East Legon

East Legon is a popular, well-established residential and lifestyle area on the northern side of Accra. It is known for its restaurants, cafés, bars, supermarkets and small shopping centres, and for being quieter and more residential than the nightlife strips closer to the coast.

It suits visitors who want space, calm streets and good food nearby, and who are happy to drive or take a ride-hailing car into central Accra. It is close to the University of Ghana at Legon, and roughly 20–30 minutes from Kotoka International Airport depending on traffic.

Airport Residential Area

The closest area to Kotoka International Airport, with a cluster of business hotels and offices. Good for very short business trips where flight times drive the schedule; less characterful for a longer family stay.

Osu

Central and walkable by Accra standards, with Oxford Street's bars, restaurants and shops. Lively and convenient for nightlife and for reaching the coast, but busier and noisier than the residential districts.

Cantonments and Labone

Leafy, central and home to many embassies. Well placed between the airport and the city, popular with longer-term expatriate visitors, and generally at the higher end for accommodation prices.

Which is right for your trip?

Visiting family or home for the holidays: a residential area with space and a kitchen — East Legon works well.

Short business trip: stay close to your meetings; Airport Residential or Cantonments if your days are packed, East Legon if you want somewhere calmer to come back to.

Nightlife-first trip: Osu or Labone put you closest to the action.

University of Ghana visits: East Legon and Legon are the natural bases.
