East Legon Travel Guide

East Legon is a popular, well-established residential and lifestyle area of Accra, on the northern side of the city near the University of Ghana. This is what to expect day to day as a visitor staying here.

Dining and cafés

Eating out is one of the reasons people choose to stay here. The area has a dense mix of Ghanaian restaurants, continental and Asian kitchens, grills, pastry shops and coffee spots, many of them within a short drive of each other along the main roads. Breakfast and brunch culture is strong, and most places are comfortable for working with a laptop for an hour.

If you would rather cook, every apartment has a full kitchen — useful when you have picked up produce from a local market or supermarket.

Shopping and everyday errands

Supermarkets, pharmacies, phone and data shops, salons and small shopping centres are all close by, so topping up a SIM card, buying groceries or finding household basics does not require a trip into central Accra. Larger malls elsewhere in the city are a drive away.

Nightlife and evenings out

East Legon has lounges, bars and live-music venues that fill up on weekends, with a more relaxed feel than the strips in Osu. During December, when Accra fills with visitors, the area gets noticeably busier — book accommodation early if you are travelling then.

University of Ghana and Legon

The University of Ghana's Legon campus sits just to the west of the neighbourhood, which makes East Legon a convenient base for families visiting students, academic visitors, conference attendees and anyone with business on campus.

Getting around

Most visitors use ride-hailing apps, which are widely available and inexpensive by international standards. Traffic into central Accra builds during morning and evening peaks, so plan meetings with room to spare. We offer complimentary airport pickup, and car rental can be arranged if you prefer to drive yourself; free parking is available on site.

Practical notes

Ghana uses the cedi (GHS); card acceptance is common in restaurants and supermarkets, and mobile money is used widely. Bring a universal adaptor for UK-style three-pin sockets. Pharmacies and private clinics are within easy reach of the neighbourhood.
